Anger management games/activities
Playing anger management games is not the same thing as playing games to take out your anger. Many people are
under the misguided impression
that playing violent games is a good way to control your
anger.
This is just not a constructive way to practice anger management. There are several
anger management activities that can be played in groups or alone that are specifically made for the purpose
of learning to control your anger.
Actual anger management games target your control, not your anger. Most people get angry because they feel as if
they are out of control, or
cannot control a situation. Getting angry is a perfectly natural
and normal emotion.
It is the people who cannot control their anger and flies off the handle, often violently, when they get angry.
They don’t know how to calm themselves down. But they typically get angry in the first place because they are
unable to take control of the situation.
Anger management activities teach you that you are not going to be able to control each and every situation. Some of the games themselves are
uncontrollable. You cannot control the game and so you might get angry at it.
The purpose of the game is to learn how to control yourself while you cannot control the game. Once you realize
that you are not going to be able to control the game, you then will use different anger management techniques to
control your own emotions.
Other anger management games are designed to help you to remember and practice anger management skills. These
are typically board games played with dice. You roll the dice and have to perform the activity that is specified by
the place where you land.
There are anger management games that offer rewards at random based on a dice roll. The purpose of this game is
to assess how you will act when you are disappointed when you don’t get the reward you want, or get no reward at
all. If it makes you angry, you have to use one of your anger management techniques to quell the anger.
It might make you feel better for the moment that you are playing violent games to take out your anger, but the
root of the anger, or what made you angry, hasn’t gone anywhere.
Once you are finished playing the game the anger will still be there. Using appropriate anger management games
you can learn how to properly deal with your anger so that it does not return.
